5.0 out of 5 stars Independence & ease even in power outages, July 21, 2008

No more asking those with strong hands to open things and it works even when the power goes out!

I have a degenerative disorder that makes, at times, twisting even a door knob challenging. One of these jar openers came with our house and it's been a wonder of ease for a decade. Everything from tiny vanilla bottles to monster church picnic sized jars. My friends have these electric contraptions taking up space on their counters that are a pain to use when the power is on and useless when the power is out.

There are several similar products on Amazon. However, when it became apparent my grandmother in-law needed help this is the one we ordered. When it came it looked to be just as sturdy and well made as the one we have and is made here in the US! Delightful.

Simply the BEST jar opener out there. WAAAY better than those rubber disks or anything hand-held. You mount this to the bottom of a kitchen cabinet, wedge in a jar, give it an easy twist, and it works WITHOUT FAIL! Every time I move, I order another one of these. I have found that sometimes the sticky-adhesive back is all that you need to mount it permanently underneath a cabinet (painted cabinet), and other times you will need to use the provided screws (cabinets with particle board bottoms). There is no reason to strain your wrist or get abrasions on your palm or bang a lid against your good counters to open a jar. Get one of these now. They aren't that expensive, and it will be well worth the small effort of mounting the thing under your cabinet. All that frustration.... gone! gone! gone!

I usually don't have problems opening jars but some really are a challenge because of the jar shape or a smooth lid. A recent jar of relish proved impossible for me and anyone else who tried so I choose the EZ Off from the many different choices, primarily because I didn't want yet another kitchen gadget clogging the drawers.

The unit seems well-enough made, a fairly tough plastic and a very simple concept. A major advantage is that you can grip the jar with two hands while using. The first time I used it I actually only needed one hand to open a tough jar. I like the fact that it can open virtually any normal size jar.

Knowing from the pictures that it has a sharp serrated blade I expected it to guage the lids on some jars, and it did. Usually only on the tightest lids. Yes it can leave some sharp metal on some lids. Of the several dozen I opened only one had some roughness to it. I can't downrate the product for that, it's part of the design ... you... Read more
